Durban – In an agreement entered into between the World Surf League (WSL) and South African Surfing Legends, the 2017 Cell C Goodwave has been officially listed as a WSL Specialty Event for the 2017 calendar.
The Cell C Goodwave is an invite-only event. The best 32 surfers in the country will be invited to compete, as well as 32 alternates. These surfers will be named by Thursday 15 December 2016.
“We’re proud of the fact that Cell C is behind the Goodwave, as well as that the World Surf League has recognised our event and has partnered with us,” said South African Surfing Legends Executive Advisor Barry Wolins. “This event is guaranteed excellent surf at one of the best beach breaks in the world, and R100k is an incredible reward for a day of surfing.”

The Cell C Goodwave 2017 has a one-day runtime, with 4 man heats and a sudden death format. The event comprises fifteen heats of high performance surfing, has a 1-year waiting period, with the call being made on the advice of surf forecasting guru Spike from www.wavescape.co.za
Should there be any openings on the day the contest organisers are also open to possible walk-up entries. Once selected, the entry fee stands at R1, and the first prize for this tournament stands at R100k.

WSL Africa Operations manager Colin Fitch was extremely pleased with the news.
“WSL Africa is excited to have the Cell C Good Wave on the WSL schedule as a regional specialty event for 2017,” said Fitch. “This is a great opportunity for our past professional surfers to mix it up with the new professional surfers in really great waves. This is also great preparation for those young surfers who have dreams of one year competing on the WSL Championship Tour. It will be fantastic to see the mixture of age and experience up against youth and fearless new age surfing”.
California Dreaming, overlooking New Pier on the beachfront, will host the competition on the day. Oakley is a supporting sponsor.
The Cell C Goodwave is a South African Surfing Legends event, with Jason Ribbink the contest director.
The contest is also sanctioned by Surfing South Africa. It is an invite-only event.
