View an awesome video clip of the best event that I ever attended. Wasn’t a CT or a QS, just a shootout between the best surfers in the world at one of the best breaks at its very best. The waves were that good that two man heats were an hour long.
Late on the Thursday, after the heats were done, Richard Cram, Michael Ho and I think Hans Hedeman got waves from Supers right to the beach break and had to take a 10 minute walk to get back to the Keyhole.
Occy won from Hans Hedeman, but the heat of the event on the Friday was between Occy and Tom Carroll.

Thanks Pat .. always a pleasure to follow the master
Pity no more of the vent is out there. For the record 30 years after, the board I was on was a 6’5″ area pin tail Hot Buttered. It had big twin fins set forward and a large area 4 inch high keel fin(high in the middle) as a stabiliser. If there’s one thing I did wrong it was not stick to that board after the first set in the best of three Quarter FInals. Kooked it on a 5’10” twinny / no stabiliser. The swell dropping and a light onshore building. Occy was astounding from go to whoa. No one was going to touch him, not even Big Simon.
Remember that event as if it were yesterday. Backhand surfing at Supers was ratcheted up several notches. I think Supers really defined Occhy. I have a black and white pic of him pushing his tail so unbelievably hard as he gouges a huge rooster.
Can you share that pic. Shafiq?
remember that day big clean perfect big cross overs carrol and occy rupert running the show that whole month was on the cook
